Seasonal Haitus

Our season is over until next summer!

Depending on the species, the harvesting season runs from about mid-spring to mid-fall, with a few oportunites for some early or late kelp here and there. During this time, the Ocean Source team will collect the majority of our seaweed, and begin selling sometime around July each year. By November, we're usually sold out.

While most of our products use this summer kelp, we do maintain our relationship with the ocean throughout the winter. We'll often gather post-reproduction kelp during our trips out just to check on the patches, and this allows us to make small batches of product throughout the winter season. Check back often for surprise stock!

Classes
Introductory Sea Foraging
July-September
Learn the basics of harvesting food from the central California coast. The Ocean Source team will teach you about what food is available, as well as when and how to find it. This class doesn't involve any actual foraging but it'll give a solid foundation for those who are interested.
The class covers harvesting seaweed and bivalves, as well as poke-poling, crabbing, and fishing for both baitfish and sportfish.
Advanced Sea Foraging
March-June
For those who have a strong theoretical handle on foraging and want guided, hands-on experience. The Ocean Source team will take you out for some seasonal foraging, gathering a sampling of what's possible given the season, tides, and weather.
We can usually collect a wide varierty of bivalves and kelp, and can often get lucky with some poke-poling or fishing. If the ocean cooperates, we will go for some larger fish, crabs, or even sharks!
Events
Lake Merritt Market
Rolling
About once a month, we show up at the Lake Merritt market to sell overstock items, new products, or off-season treats. Come find us and say hello and try some kelp!
Pop-Ups
TBA
We occasionally do pop-up events around the SF Bay Area, usually to test some new kelpy treat. We have nothing planned at the moment, but stay tuned for any updates!
Beach Clean-Ups
TBA
A few times a year, Ocean Source participates in or organizes beach clean-ups, often involving foraged food. Our last big clean up was at Grey Whale Cove—check back often for the next clean-up!
