Ocean Source

About Us

Ocean Source

Our Mission

Ocean Source was founded on three core principles. First, we care about sustainability. All of our kelp is harvested by hand, either straight from the coastal rocks or from a human-powered kayak. We always leave plenty for others, and either forage, take in sustainable ways, or harvest post-reproduction. Second, we want to make delicious food that people will love and enjoy. And third, our company was build on a general love of the ocean. One of our goals is to show people that our California coastline is truly a beautiful resource that we're lucky to have.

The Team

Our team has professional backgrounds in law, economics, and computer science—but our common thread is the ocean. All of us are avid surfers, fishermen, and boaters, spending as much time in the water as on land.

We came together thanks to our mutual love of the sea, our passion for sustainability, and our desire to build something with a net positive impact. We hope that our project will play even a small role in inspiring the next generation of ocean stweards.

Looking into

Our Future

Ocean Source is currently making kelp products—but our ultimate goal goes beyond foraging. Eventually, we hope to run a multi-trophic aquaculture operation off the California coast. Multi-trophic aquaculture is a concept pioneered by Bren Smith, founder of Greenwave, and is, in our view, the most sustainable way to eat.

A true multi-trophic kelp farm does several things. It is carbon-negative, meaning it soaks up more carbon than it uses. It is a fully balanced ecosystem supporting kelp, fish, crustaceans, bivalves, and other shellfish. And, it can provide much more food for its size than traditional farming.

More information on this process can be found at greenwave.org. We are currently trying to get through all of the bureaucratic red tape to jump-start this industry in California, and helping others navigate the process.
